In the room
What the ratio means for your child
A ratio is the most children one adult may supervise at a time. With babies at 1:4, a full infant room of 12, the largest group Virginia allows, needs at least 3 caregivers. At 18 months it is 1:5 in a group of up to 15, and at 35 months, just before age 3, it is 1:8 in a group of up to 24.
Those numbers are a minimum to check, not a promise. Rooms are easiest to fall short at opening, closing and lunch breaks, when staff are coming and going. On your tour, count the adults and children in the room, and ask how the center keeps to the ratio when children move outside or between rooms.
When a room mixes ages, Virginia's rules set the ratio by a ratio written for mixed-age groups.
