Before you enroll
Choosing an in-home daycare
- 1
Ask who else is in the home
Ask who lives in the home and who helps with the children. Many states require background checks for adults living in a licensed home.
- 2
Ask about backup care
With one provider, a sick day or vacation closes the daycare. Ask how many days a year they close and what families do then.
- 3
Ask about the group
Ask how many children come each day and their ages. A home daycare often mixes babies and school-age children in one group.
- 4
Check the license record
Open the daycare's page here to see its license type, capacity and the state's inspection record, where we hold them.

Questions
Questions about in-home daycares
How many home daycares are listed?
Over 80,000 home daycares are listed across 47 states and DC, most of them from each state's license records.
What is the difference between in-home daycare and family child care?
They are the same thing. State licenses call it a family child care home (or a group or large family home when there is an assistant): a provider caring for a small group of children in their own home.
Why is there no street address?
An in-home daycare is the provider's own home. We show the town and ZIP code only; the provider shares the address with families.
How much does a home daycare cost?
It varies by county. In the middle US county, home daycares charge a median $143 a week for infants and $131 a week for preschool-age children (U.S. Department of Labor, 2022). Each town page shows its own county's median.
Are home daycares licensed?
Most here are on their state's child care license record. Open any of those for its license and, where the state publishes it, the inspection record. The others, where no state license record is available, come from public business listings; their pages say that no license record is matched yet.
