Where our data comes from

Our license and inspection records come from each state's child care licensing agency. We add county prices from the U.S. Department of Labor and details that daycares and parents send us, and every fact is labelled with its source where it appears.

From the state license

License and inspections

License type, number, status, capacity, ages served and first licensed date. Inspection visits and cited rules where the state publishes them.

From its business listing

Name, address and hours

The name, address, phone, website and hours the business publishes. A listing with no state license record matched says so.

From its website

Programs and tuition

Programs, approach and posted tuition from the daycare's own website.

U.S. Department of Labor

County prices

Median weekly prices for center and home daycare in each county, shown with the survey year.

Provided by the business

Owner updates

Hours, openings, photos and descriptions added by providers who claimed their listing.

State by state

What each state publishes

States differ in what they make public. This table shows what each state publishes and what our listings carry. In states where inspections are only on the state's own site, each listing links there.

"Not held" is about what the state publishes and what our copy holds, not about the daycare. In Kansas, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon and Rhode Island, listings come from public business listings until the state license list is loaded.

Freshness

How often we update

We update each state's records regularly. The table shows the date of the latest update for each state. Website details carry the month we checked them, and county prices carry their survey year.

Read with care

The limits

The state's own record is the authority. Ours is a copy and can lag behind it. A missing record, visit or cited rule on our site is not proof of anything about a daycare: the state may not publish it, or our copy may not hold it yet. Before you decide, check with the daycare and the state licensing agency.

Report an error

Use "Report a problem" on any listing, or contact us. We check the report and correct our copy. To change the state record itself, contact the state licensing agency.

What we never do

  • Rank or score daycares
  • Invent openings, prices, ratings or reviews
  • Show a home daycare's street address
  • Change the state record for a paying provider
