In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may watch at the same time. At 18 months the ratio is 1:9, but a group may hold only 10, so a full room of 10 toddlers still needs 2 adults.

The ratio is a minimum, and a room can fall short of it at some hours of the day. Early mornings, late afternoons and lunch breaks are when a room most often runs short, so count the adults and children on your tour and ask how breaks are covered.

When a room mixes ages, Mississippi's rules set the ratio by the age of the youngest child.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in Mississippi

Mississippi's rules for home daycares follow the size of the group. A family home daycare stays at a set maximum number of children, and a larger group home uses age-based ratios much like a center's, starting at 5 babies under age 1 for each adult.

Ask any home daycare how many children it cares for on a typical day, how many are babies, and who helps the provider during meals, naps and pick-up.

  • As the national database records them
  • Family child care home (one provider): up to 12 children.
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): the rule reads (children to adults): “5:1 for younger than 1 year; 9:1 for 1 year; 12:1 for 2 years; 14:1 for 3 years; 16:1 for 4 years; 20:1 for 5 to 9 years; 25:1 for 10 to 12 years.”

Enforcement

How Mississippi checks these rules

  • Centers: Mississippi reported routine inspections more than three times a year, without notice.
  • Family child care homes: routine inspections more than three times a year, without notice.

Inspection schedules are from a 2017 national survey of state licensing agencies.

On the tour

Ask about ratios on a tour

  • How many adults are in my child's room, and how many children?
  • How do staff keep track of every child during outdoor play, nap and pick-up?
  • Who may pick up my child, and how do you check?
  • Is the ratio the same at the start and end of the day, when fewer staff are in?
