In the room
What the ratio means for your child
A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at the same time. At 1:4 for babies and young toddlers, a full room of 8 needs at least 2 caregivers. From age 3, Missouri sets no group size, so a room of 3- and 4-year-olds can be large as long as there is an adult for every 10.
The ratio is a minimum. Watch for the times it is easiest to slip, such as early drop-off and late pick-up, and count the adults and children yourself on your tour. Supervision and ratio rules were 3.3% of the rules Missouri inspectors cited since October 2023, cited at 26% of the daycares visited.
When a room mixes ages, Missouri's rules set the ratio by a ratio written for mixed-age groups.
Home daycares
Rules for home daycares in Missouri
Missouri home daycares have their own limits, and they shrink as the number of babies grows: a family home caring for no more than 2 children under age 2 may have up to 10 children, but far fewer when most are babies. Group homes, with more caregivers, may care for up to 20 children.
Ask a home daycare how many children under age 2 it cares for, how many adults are there through the day and who covers when the provider steps away.
- As the national database records them
- Family child care home (one provider): the rule reads: “10, if 2 children are younger than 2 years; 6, if 3 children are younger than 2 years; 4, if all children are younger than 2 years.”
- Group child care home (two or more providers): the rule reads (children to adults): “4:1 for birth to 36 months; 8:1 for 24 to 36 months; 10:1 for 3 to 4 years; 16:1 for 5 years and older. 10:1 for more than 4 children ages 24 to 36 months, and at least one child older than 36 months. 8:1, with more than 4 children ages 24 to 36 months, and at least one child older than 36 months.” Largest group: 20 children.
