In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at once. Michigan keeps babies and young toddlers at 1:4 all the way to 18 months, so a full room of 12 needs at least 3 caregivers. At 35 months, just before age 3, the ratio is 1:8 in a group of up to 24.

The ratio is a minimum, and it is easiest to miss when staff are on breaks or the day is starting or ending. On your tour, count the adults and children in the room yourself, and ask how the center covers when a teacher is out.

When a room mixes ages, Michigan's rules set the ratio by the age of the youngest child.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in Michigan

Michigan licenses two kinds of home daycare. A family child care home, with one provider, may care for up to 6 children. A group child care home has two or more caregivers and may care for up to 12, keeping to one adult for every 6 children.

In either setting, ask how many of the children are babies, whether the provider's own young children count toward the limit, and who the other caregivers are in a group home.

  • As the national database records them
  • Family child care home (one provider): up to 6 children.
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): 6 children to 1 adult. Largest group: 12 children.

Enforcement

How Michigan checks these rules

  • Centers: Michigan reported routine inspections once a year, without notice.
  • Family child care homes: routine inspections once a year, without notice.

Inspection schedules are from a 2017 national survey of state licensing agencies.
