In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at the same time. At 1:3 for babies, a full room of 7 infants needs at least 3 caregivers. At 1:10 for preschoolers, a room of 20 needs 2.

Treat the ratio as a floor. Some centers staff above it, others run right at it, and the start and end of the day, when fewer staff are in, are the easiest times to slip. On your tour, count the adults and children in the room yourself.

When a room mixes ages, Massachusetts's rules set the ratio by a ratio written for mixed-age groups.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in Massachusetts

Massachusetts family child care homes are licensed and have their own size limit: 6 children, plus a few school-age children. The national database lists no separate rules for group child care homes in Massachusetts.

A home daycare mixes ages, so ask how many babies and toddlers are in the group, whether an assistant ever works with the provider, and who covers when the provider needs a break.

  • As the national database records them
  • Family child care home (one provider): up to 6 children (plus 4 school-age children).
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): no licensing rules listed for this setting in Massachusetts.
