In the room
What the ratio means for your child
A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at once. At 1:5 for babies, a full infant room of 10 needs at least 2 caregivers in it the whole time, and if a third adult steps in, the babies get more attention.
Treat the ratio as a floor, not a promise. Rooms are easiest to run short early in the morning, at nap time and late in the day, when fewer staff are on. On your tour, count the adults and children in the room yourself and ask how the daycare covers breaks.
When a room mixes ages, Kentucky's rules set the ratio by the age of the youngest child.
Home daycares
Rules for home daycares in Kentucky
A certified home daycare in Kentucky may care for up to 6 children. With one provider and children of mixed ages, ask how many are babies or toddlers, how the provider handles naps and meals with several little ones, and who steps in if the provider is sick.
The national database lists no licensing rules for larger group home daycares in Kentucky. If a home cares for more children, ask which state rules it follows, whether it has a license or certificate, and how many adults are there at a time.
- As the national database records them
