In the room
What the ratio means for your child
A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at the same time. At 1:4, a room of 12 babies, the largest infant group Illinois allows, needs at least 3 caregivers. A preschool room of 20 four-year-olds needs 2 adults at 1:10.
When a room mixes ages, Illinois sets the ratio by the youngest child, so one baby in a toddler room changes the count. The ratio is a minimum: on your tour, count the adults and children in the room yourself, and ask whether the numbers hold at opening and closing time.
When a room mixes ages, Illinois's rules set the ratio by the age of the youngest child.
Home daycares
Rules for home daycares in Illinois
Most Illinois daycares on DaycarePal are home daycares. A family home with one provider may care for more children if some of them are school-age, and a group home with an assistant may care for more still. The more children of school age, the more the provider can take, so ask how many babies and toddlers are in the group during the school day.
Ask whether an assistant is there whenever the group is above one provider's limit, and who covers when the provider steps away.
- As the national database records them
- Family child care home (one provider): the rule reads: “up to 12 (8 plus 4 school-age children)”
- Group child care home (two or more providers): the rule reads (children to adults): “8:1; 12:1, if school-age children.”
