In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at the same time. At 1:6, a room of 12 babies needs at least 2 caregivers. Because Idaho sets no group size limit, a center can run a larger room as long as it adds adults, so it is worth asking how big your child's group is.

The ratio is a minimum, not a target. Babies at 1:6 is a lot of hands-on care for one adult, so look at how many adults are actually in the infant room, most of all early in the morning and late in the day when fewer staff are in.

Idaho's rules cover mixed-age groups; ask the daycare which ratio it follows when ages mix.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in Idaho

The national database of state licensing rules lists no licensing rules for small family home daycares in Idaho, so ask a home daycare whether it holds a license and which rules it follows.

Group home daycares are licensed and use a point system rather than a plain ratio: younger children count for more points, so one adult can look after fewer babies than preschoolers. Ask the provider how many babies and toddlers are in the group and who helps when the group is full.

  • As the national database records them
  • Family child care home (one provider): no licensing rules listed for this setting in Idaho.
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): the rule reads (children to adults): “The maximum allowable points for each staff member is twelve (12), using the following point system which is based on the age of each child in attendance: a. Under the age of twenty-four (24) months, each child equals two (2) points. b. From the age of twenty-four (24) months to under the age of thirty-six (36) months, each child equals one and one-half (1 1/2) points. c. From the age of thirty-six (36) months to under the age of five (5) years, each child equals one (1) point. d. From the age of five (5) years to under the age of thirteen (13) years, each child equals one-half (1/ 2) point.” Largest group: 12 children.

How Idaho checks these rules

  • Centers: Idaho reported routine inspections once every two years.
  • In the inspection records: rules on supervision and ratios were 16.6% of the rules Idaho inspectors cited since October 2023, and 22% of the daycares visited had one cited.

What Idaho inspectors cite shows the rule areas cited most often.

Inspection schedules are from a 2017 national survey of state licensing agencies.

On the tour

Ask about ratios on a tour

  • How many adults are in my child's room, and how many children?
  • How do staff keep track of every child during outdoor play, nap and pick-up?
  • Who may pick up my child, and how do you check?
  • Is the ratio the same at the start and end of the day, when fewer staff are in?
