In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at the same time. Iowa keeps 1:4 until 18 months, so a room of 12 babies and young toddlers needs at least 3 caregivers in it, and a room of 20 three-year-olds at 1:10 needs 2.

The ratio is a minimum. Rooms run thinnest at opening, nap time and closing, and when staff take breaks. On your tour, count the adults and children in the room yourself, and ask how big your child's group is, since the room size matters as much as the ratio.

Iowa's rules cover mixed-age groups; ask the daycare which ratio it follows when ages mix.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in Iowa

A smaller registered home daycare in Iowa may care for up to 6 children plus up to 2 school-age children, usually with one provider. Ask how many of the children are babies or toddlers and who steps in when the provider is sick.

A larger registered home may care for up to 14 children plus 2 school-age children, at up to 8 children per adult, so a full home needs a second adult. Ask who the assistant is and when they are there.

  • Family child care home (one provider): up to 6 children (plus 2 school-age children).
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): 8 children to 1 adult.
