Daycare ratios in Florida

In a Florida daycare center, one adult may care for up to 4 babies, 6 children at 18 months, 15 three-year-olds or 20 four-year-olds. Florida's rules in the national database set no limit on group size, so ask how many children share a room.

In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at the same time. At 1:4, a room of 12 babies needs at least 3 caregivers, and at 1:20 a room of four-year-olds needs a second adult as soon as it has more than 20 children.

Without a group size cap in the rules, a room can hold a large group as long as there are enough adults for the ages in it. On your tour, count the adults and children in your child's room yourself, and ask whether the numbers change at opening and closing time, when fewer staff are in.

When a room mixes ages, Florida's rules set the ratio by a ratio written for mixed-age groups.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in Florida

A Florida family day care home has a total limit with a separate cap on how many children may be preschool-age, and a large family child care home with two adults may care for up to 12. The mix of ages decides the limit, so ask how many babies and toddlers under 2 are in the group.

Ask too whether the second adult in a large home is there all day, and who watches the children when the provider is cooking, changing a diaper or on the phone.

  • As the national database records them
  • Family child care home (one provider): up to 10 children (if no more than 5 are preschool-age).
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): the rule reads (children to adults): “8:2, if all children are birth to 24 months; 12:2, if no more than 4 are younger than 24 months.” Largest group: 12 children.
