In the room

What the ratio means for your child

A ratio is the most children one adult may care for at once. At 1:6 for toddlers, a room of 12 children at 18 months, the most California allows in one toddler group, needs at least 2 adults; a preschool room of 12 four-year-olds may have just one.

The ratio is a minimum, not a promise of what you will see. Rooms are most likely to run at the limit early in the morning and late in the day, when fewer staff are in. For babies and preschoolers the rules set no group size limit, so ask how many children share your child's room and how many adults are with them.

The national database does not list a separate rule for mixed-age groups in California.

Home daycares

Rules for home daycares in California

In a California family child care home, one provider may have babies, toddlers and older children together, so ask how many babies are in the group and who steps in when the provider is busy with one child.

In a larger home with an assistant, ask whether the second adult is there for the whole day or only part of it, since the higher limit depends on two adults being present.

  • As the national database records them
  • Family child care home (one provider): up to 6 children (plus 2 school-age children).
  • Group child care home (two or more providers): 6 children to 1 adult (plus 2 school-age children).
