Reading the numbers

Where these figures come from

These prices come from the U.S. Department of Labor's 2022 county survey, which draws on Maine's own surveys of what providers charge. The median is the middle of Maine's 16 counties, and each county counts the same.

We read 195 Maine daycare websites for prices, and only 13 post a full-time rate, too few for a 2026 figure. Prices may have gone up since 2022, so ask each daycare what it charges now.

Paying for care

Ways to lower the cost

Maine's Child Care Affordability Program, run by the Office of Child and Family Services in the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, helps families pay for care. On DaycarePal, 866 Maine daycares are listed as accepting child care assistance: see the Maine daycares that accept it.

Head Start and Early Head Start are free for families who qualify, mostly by income, and serve children from birth to age 5. You can look up a Head Start program by address.

A part-time schedule can also lower the bill. When you compare daycares, ask about registration fees, sibling discounts and what happens to the rate when your family is on vacation.
