    • Safety and hazards

Regulation 5.10.3.1.6: The outdoor play area shall be free of dumpsters, uncovered trash cans, highly flammable materials, standing pools of water and other hazards. Staff shall inspect the outdoor play area before children begin to play to make sure there are no hazards present such as, but not limited to, animal feces, litter, adult tools, or other items that might injure a child.

“Gardening tools, potting mix, and an open trash can was observed behind the infant swings on one of the playgrounds. Another uncovered trash can was observed on the large playground along with discarded cat litter boxes under the stairs. Corrective Action: Cover trash cans and remove identified hazards from both playgrounds. Send photos of the covered trash cans and the playground spaces where hazards have been removed to Licensing Field Specialist Stark. Develop a plan for the routine inspection of the outdoor areas. Send a detailed description to Licensing Field Specialist Stark. Status: Appeal Period.”

    • Building, equipment and play areas

Regulation 5.10.1.1.3: Furniture and equipment shall be sturdy. Furniture and equipment that present a tipping or falling hazard shall be secured.

“An air conditioner in a preschool window was plugged into an outlet below the unit. The cord was loose and accessible to children. This is a tipping hazard if a child pulls on the cord. Next to this was a fan, plugged into the same outlet. The cord to the fan was also loose and accessible to children. The fan was sitting on a container of blocks and may become a tipping hazard if the cord is pulled on. Corrective Action: Block the children's access to the loose cords by securing them against the wall and/or behind object. Send photos of the secured equipment to Licensing Field Specialist Stark. Develop a plan to monitor tipping and falling hazards regularly in the program facility. Status: Appeal Period.”
